About our Teaching Farm
The Broadened Horizons Organic Farm is located in West Roane County in East Tennessee. It is an 11.3-acre segment of a larger 96 acre land parcel protected under a conservation easement. This hillside and bottom land area was formally used as a beef cattle farm, and is located within a stones throw of the impounded upper Tennessee River (Watts Bar Reservoir). We are a "grass-roots," family-operated working and teaching farm.
Founded in January of 2004, the farm's mission is primarily dedicated toward the learning and teaching of natural and sustainable practices of soil and water restoration through a multi-faceted organic / permaculture-based program of thoughtful land use planning and stewardship practices. Central to this goal is a comprehensive rainwater collection system that harvests and stores rainwater in cisterns and ponds for ongoing and future use in crop irrigation, livestock and poultry watering, poultry facility washing, aquatic food supply and wildlife habitat enhancement.
The farm is home to a multi-year, farm-bred, mixed-flock of selected heritage breed laying hens that are free-range pastured year round in a two acre complex of multiple runs and age-related housing options. It also hosts a small apiary. Multiple gardens, orchards, and greenhouses provide fruits and vegetables in the appropriate seasons.
Sales of our seed products are conducted from our website and from the farm. We are open for business from 8:30 a.m until 4 p.m.- year-round. Seed & Plant Products currently for sale can be found on our website.
In conjunction with our land restoration work, is our ongoing program to convert existing buildings over to greater seasonal energy efficiency. Construction of existing or new structures are guided by the following criteria: to be low in material cost, to factor in directional orientation, to have minimum topographical impact, to maximum the use of vegetative landscaping, and the predominate use of local materials. All of our building projects involve at least 85% useage of local, natural, recycled and salvaged materials.
We offer year-round guided tours and seasonal hands-on workshops, as a way to share our decades of experience and knowledge. We invite you to tour our website, and learn about our sustainable land practices, the long-term vision of the Broadened Horizons staff, and the daily workings of our sustainability teaching farm.
